Genealogy.
For those of you who have been bitten by the genealogy bug our genealogist Angela Lewis put together some handy information including links to sites with great information for those of you who wish to get started on working on their family genealogy!
Family Search
This is the Mormon’s database. It’s valuable but no 100% perfect. Look under the tab “search records” to access the database. Their Family History Centers (FHC) are located in each state (
www.familysearch.org).
Ordering Records
To
obtain records before 1920 you will need to get them from the microfilms. New Mexico did not start officially keeping birth and death records until 1920 (
New Mexico's Records).
New Mexico Death Index
Maintained by Sam-Quito Padilla, this database contains death records for the years 1899-1949. There’s a link where you can also order the death record/certificate (
Death Index).
Rio Abajo Database
Maintained by Sam-Quito Padilla, this database contains the founding families of the Rio Abajo area, including families from Socorro, Valencia and Sierra counties. It’s valuable but not 100 % perfect (
Rio Abajo Database).
Village of Carnuel
Maintained by Jackie Luna, this website is dedicated to the petitioner/grantees of the Canon de Carnuel Land Grants of 1763 and 1819 and their heirs. The website contains families and histories, and also contains many church records from this area (
Carnuel Records).
Trementina, New Mexico
Maintained by Henrietta Christmas, this website contains a variety of New Mexico research information, including a lot of personal research. Trementina is east of Las Vegas on NM 104/65 (
www.trementina.com).
Gurule Families
Maintaned by Angela Lewis. This website contains all the Gurule families, and their histories, census records, baptisms and marriage records, cousin’ pages, etc (
www.gurulefamily.org). Managed by Angel Cervantes, the New Mexico DNA Project contains the DNA results for most surnames.
More people need to get their DNA tested. Females carry the mtDNA coding which traces their maternal lineage (mother, to grandmother, to great-grandmother, etc.). Males carry both the mtDNA coding and the Y-DNA coding (father, to grandfather, to great-grandfather, etc.).
